The Meaning of Fortaleza

In the 1700's, Portuguese and Spanish invaders were arriving on the coast of Brazil. Therefore, the people in this area build a fort to protect themselves from these invaders. Fort means fort and leza means strong, therefore, Fortaleza is a strong fort to protect the inhabitants from invaders from the sea.
